Summer Studio News 2024

It’s Labor Day Weekend and I’m thinking I better get my summer newsletter out before any more snow flies on the mountains as it did early last week. Many Central Oregon gardens and farms lost plants and flowers to a hard freeze. Then yesterday the high reached 96 – a nearly 60 degree swing in days. Welcome to the high desert.

This summer-melding-into-fall is my very favorite season here. The nights get crisp, the skies turn deep indigo, colors in the landscape grow saturated, details sharpen. Thank you cold snap and hard-working firefighters for suppressing many of our wildfires. So grateful for the clearer air.

The Lakes Beckon, acrylic on canvas, 34x42 inches

I’ve been trying to hold my new work close as I prepare for featured artist showings at two galleries in October and November. Sometimes though, I’m so pleased with a new painting, I can’t resist sharing at least a work-in-progress glimpse. When I posted a reel of The Lakes Beckon in June, a painting that was meant to be the cornerstone of my Tumalo Art Co. show, I soon found myself delivering it to its new home instead. A happy outcome that gave me a bit more work to do this summer in the studio.

Art in the West

at the HIGH DESERT MUSEUM

The Waning Light, acrylic, 24x24 inches

The Art in the West exhibition opened in July at the High Desert Museum. This juried exhibition features traditional and contemporary art celebrating the vast High Desert. It’s an honor to be included. Auction proceeds support the museum’s programs and exhibits as well as the participating artists. I’m delighted that my painting is hanging across the hall from the always busy bobcat habitat. You can view the entire show in person or online and bidding remains open until the closing party on September 20, 2024. That event is free, but registration is required.

Save the Dates

COMING THIS FALL

Two works in progress in the studio this summer.

Mark your calendar for the Sisters’ Fourth Friday Art Walk on October 25 from 4 to 7 pm and please be sure to stop by Hood Avenue Art Gallery. I’ll be one of three featured artists and will enjoy sharing several paintings celebrating my favorite season and places.

The following week, you’ll find me at Tumalo Art Company in the Old Mill District on Friday, November 1 from 4 to 7 pm. It was a bit daunting to select a theme for a show opening the weekend before this epic election. My Instagram profile quotes a Carole King song I know best from Taj Mahal’s cover, “remember the feeling as a child, when you woke up and morning smiled.” Having my children later in life than many helped me recapture that joy of being in the moment that I try to express in my paintings. For me that translates into a desire to love and protect this place, better yet this planet, in order to leave a home for our children's  children. A Sense of Wonder takes a close look at a little Cascade lake that has been a touchstone place, witnessing both joys and sorrows, over every season of my thirty years here in Central Oregon.

Giclée Reproductions

ON PAPER AND CANVAS

Over the past several months, I have continued to build my inventory of fine art giclées printed in archival inks on acid-free paper or on gallery-wrapped canvas. These are some of the new images I’ve added. Soon I will announce a new shop on my website, which will allow you to order prints directly and have them shipped for the holidays. Meanwhile, you can shop my 12x12 and 11x14 inch giclées on paper at both Tumalo Art Co. and the High Desert Museum shop. Many paintings can also be reproduced larger. Please email me with specific requests.

In a few short weeks we will officially say farewell to summer. I must say I am anticipating the months ahead with excitement. I'll be busy putting finishing touches on a few last canvases, attending art openings and closings, heading out on a trail, or catching one last float on a serene lake. I hope to see you, or hear from you, and thank you as always for supporting my journey.
